Baked Beans Back on the Shopping List

Apparantly, the increase in sales of baked beans has been put down to shoppers being squeezed by the effects of the credit crunch biting.  Reports are indicating that sales of beans rose to just over £300m in the year to August, 12% up on last year.

Sales of Branston baked beans, which were launched in 2005 in an attempt to take on Heinz, have risen 22% over the past 12 months, the company said. "The credit crunch is undoubtedly having some effect," said the Branston head of marketing, Sheraz Dar. "Baked beans provide a very cheap source of fibre and protein, so it’s not surprising people are increasingly turning to baked beans for nutrition."

I, however, have a couple of thoughts about this. Firstly, is it a false economy? Will not the price of baked beans risen alongside evertything else that we buy in shops and supermarkets?

Also, will this increase in baked bean consumption cause the UK’s greenhouse gas emmissions to soar?

can only assume that the sale of bread has increased as well as beans are best eaten dolloped over some hot buttered toast!
