Broome Hotels An Affordable & Well-Located Base From Which To Explore The Kimberley
Broome hotels receive thousands of visitors each year keen to explore the pearling history of the town and the many natural wonders of the Kimberley region as a whole. During its pearling heyday, from the late 1800s until World War I, Broome bustled as a busy pearling port. Throughout that period of some thirty years, the rhythm of life in the town moved with massive ten metre tides and the coming and going of the large fleet of luggers.
Minyirr is a Yawuru word meaning birthplace. It is the name of a new suburb at Broome situated between the main town and Gantheume Point. The name is significant since the Yawuru people consider that specific spot to be the site where they were all, as a people, originally created.
Broome is at the centre of a large tract of Yawuru land extends that extends from Wirkinmirre (Willie Creek) in the north, through to Mangalagun (Crab Creek) in the east and then south to Warrawan (Barn Hill). The Yawaru population has consistently declined since European first settled the area. The current indigenous population is very small.
The error was eventually corrected, by Phillip Parker King (1791-1856) in 1821. He was a hydrographer and navy officer. He was the person that gave Roebuck Bay its name and was the first European to anchor in that body of water. In 1817, the British government assigned priority to the further exploration and mapping of the coast of New Holland not already surveyed by Captain Flinders. Lieutenant King was appointed for this task.
The error was eventually corrected, by Phillip Parker King (1791-1856) in 1821, who renamed it Gantheume Point. King also named Roebuck Bay and Dampier Creek. The bay was named after the vessel William Dampier commanded when he sailed past the site in 1699 and Dampier Creek was named after the explorer himself.
The Mermaid sailed across the Great Australian Bight, along the vast southern coastline of the continent. The vessel reached the North West Cape, in the vicinity of where the Harold Holt Naval base stands today. The survey work was to begin broadly from that point and proceed north. When King reached Roebuck Bay some days later, he named it after the ship that Dampier commanded when he sailed past in 1699. He also named Dampier Creek after the daring explorer. Finally, he also renamed Gantheume Island to Gantheume Point.
Broome was bombed by Japanese air force on 3 March 1942. Several deaths resulted from that surprise bombing. Many residents moved south to Perth following that raid.
Wickham had left England in 1837 to chart the northwest coasts of Australia as well as the Gulf of Carpentaria. The Beagle arrived in Australian waters during December 1837. He continued the surveys until December 1841 when poor health forced him to retire.
Broome hotels provide a comfortable and affordable base from which to explore Broome and its surrounds including the forty-four kilometre length of pristine white sand known as Cable Beach, the Japanese cemetery, historic Streeters Jetty, the Broome Bird Observatory, and the Historical Museum. More broadly, the town is a great base from which to explore the vast Kimberley.
Dianne Shapely initially went along to this particular component of Western Australia during 2001 while she was voyaging along the Australian shoreline along with her spouse. She liked the district so considerably that she put in place a Broome accommodation venture.
