What a weird week it’s been as far as current events go. I’m sure that by now you’ve heard about the Heene incident, as the balloon boy story was captured by just about every major media outlet. The Heene parents decided to call authorities to let them know that their son Falcon had been taken into the air by a homemade balloon.

What made it all even odder was the fact that this balloon resembled an alien spacecraft, as it was built in the mold of a flying saucer. It quickly rose thousands of feet into the air, and authorities frantically chased it down, trying to save the boy’s life.

A few hours later as the helium died down, the flying saucer came into a very surprisingly soft descent, landing on the ground but still leading authorities to believe that the worse was be to expected. Somehow, Falcon wasn’t inside the balloon. Where was he? Hiding in the family’s attic.

During an interview with Wolf Blitzer on CNN later that night, Falcon let something very interesting slip out – that he had been hiding in the family attic “for the show”. The Heenes quickly looked panicked and on edge after Wolf Blitzer questioned the family about this little slip-up.

This led many to speculate that the Heenes had staged the entire incident, which raised serious ethical questions. How could someone pretend that the life of their son was on the line, simply for the prospect of fame?

Clearly, the Heenes made the entire incident up because they wanted a reality TV show. They sacrificed the integrity of our nation’s emergency system for their own gain.

The costs associated with the chase were high, as was the media coverage. Simply put, you don’t toy with anyone’s emotions like this, especially when it involves the life of your own son.

The Heenes will likely be charged from here, and they deserve whatever they get for such immature and selfish behavior. I pity the children who have to grow up with such parents. They don’t deserve to endure whatever it is that they’re about to go through.

One positive message from the global economic crisis is that it creates a need for a system of taxation more appropriate to a civilised democracy.

At the Liberal Democrat conference, the wise Vince Cable proposed that taxes for ordinary working families be cut by closing tax “loopholes” for the ultra-wealthy. The avoidance of capital and inheritance taxes available to multi-millionaire families makes fools of the middle classes who fret about passing on the family home.

There have been calls for the abolition of the “tax havens” which do so much to support international crime, whether in drugs and people-trafficking or terrorism, and hiding the booty stolen from the poor by the world’s despots. Because 35 of the world’s 72 “havens”‘ are either British territories or Commonwealth members, the UK has a unique responsibility, to close them.

Other suggestions include calls for a higher rate of tax on all the ultra-wealthy instead of just limiting bankers’ so-called “earnings”.

We are entering a recession. if the country is to maintain social cohesion in the difficult times ahead it is vital that all political parties recognise the damage caused by the fraudulent dogma of “trickle-down” economics. in just 30 years, it has not only created a bubble based on hype and debt, but has also returned us to an almost medieval financial gulf in society between a tiny privileged elite and the taxpaying majority. it is time for clear, straightforward fairness and honesty.

The present financial crisis, taken together with the effects on all of us of impending climate change, point to the necessity of remutualisation across a wide range of society’s activities. Not socialism, nor communism, just a recognition that within a system of finite resources “me first” doesn’t work.

If not, the poor will suffer, and the rich will suffer at the hands of the poor. There’s not much point having a Porsche if you can’t, or daren’t, drive it.

Just three days after the Government threw a £20billion lifeline to Britain’s beleaguered banks, RBS has come under fire for spending £150,000 on a party for staff at a five-star hotel.

Despite the bank being propped up by millions of taxpayers’ money at the moment, around 100 employees were flown in from 11 different countries to the two-day event, which was hosted by rugby star Rory Underwood and a top magician.

The freebie was held at the Grand Hotel in Eastbourne, East Sussex, where rooms cost £335 per night.

There the RBS staff enjoyed a free bar while the menu included sashimi salmon, beef wellington with Maderia jus and white chocolate.

Staff, who also enjoyed dance classes to Abba songs and a paper plane contest, took down company logos and removed branded items in a bid to keep the event quiet, The Sun reported.

A hotel worker said: ‘There were supposed to be 196 execs but they were so worried it would leak they cut it to 100, even though all rooms were paid for.’

A RBS spokeswoman said: ‘This was a working event to bring together our international team.’

The news comes after RBS chief executive Sir Fred Goodwin announced he was quitting the bank following the Government’s bail-out.
