The Art And Science Of Building Demolition
Demolishing a small building is easy. You use a crane and wrecking ball. To demolish bigger buildings, however, trained professionals who have studied the science of building demolition will be required. These experts have been taught how to effectively and safely blow up a building with the careful placement of high explosives used in tandem with gravity.
The theory is to remove a building’s support system. This will bring the part of the building above falling down, and this in turn brings down the levels underneath. The added weight of each floor cumulates in a demolished building.
The successful demolishing of a building will be outlined ahead of time. Demolishers will examine the structure’s blueprints, pinpointing where explosive charges will have the greatest impact. They then do a walkthrough of the actual building, to make sure that the reality of the finished structure matches what they’ve seen on the blueprints. Finally, they decide on the type of explosives, finalize their placement, and figure out the timing of the blasts.
The biggest concern is determining which way the doomed building will fall as the detonations go off. In an ideal situation, it’ll fall sideways into a parking lot or an open space of some sort. This is the easiest and safest way to bring it down. Sometimes cables are attached to the building to help pull it in the right direction.
At other times, there is no open area for the structure to be brought down into. In these challenging situations, the building is imploded, which brings the entire structure down into its footprint. These are usually the most awe-inspiring kinds of demolitions to watch.
The men and women who blow up the buildings are called blasters. Blasters look at a structure as if it were just a series of towers, and every tower has to be brought down in precisely the same way. They blow the major support pillars at the base first, and immediately follow up with charges at the upper floors. When done right, the towers smash against one another in a way that results in a safely demolished building. Professional blasters make it seem easy, and the only thing left afterward is the clean up.
Occasionally, pre-detonation crews will take out a few load bearing walls prior to the main event. This can result in a smoother collapse, since some of these floors could provide some unwanted support. But when all is said and done, the blasters go to work with dynamite and other explosives to bring a building safely crashing to the ground. The proper demolition of a building is determined by science, but good professionals can make it look more like art.
